Defluoridation Media for Drinking Water

Activated alumina removes fluoride from drinking water in household filters, community plants and municipal systems, bringing it below the WHO guideline of 1.5 mg/L. We supply defluoridation-grade activated alumina with ceramic ball supports.

01The challenge

Why remove fluoride from drinking water?

Groundwater in many regions carries fluoride well above the WHO guideline of 1.5 mg/L, which causes dental and skeletal fluorosis with long-term use. Boiling does not remove fluoride, so it has to be taken out by adsorption, precipitation or membranes; activated alumina is the most widely used adsorption medium.

Our solution

  • Grade: defluoridation-grade activated alumina, 1–2 or 2–3 mm, in fixed-bed filters; works best with raw water adjusted to about pH 5.5–6.5.
  • Regeneration: backwash, regenerate with dilute sodium hydroxide, then rinse and neutralise with dilute acid; the media is reused over many cycles.
  • Outlet spec: fluoride below 1.5 mg/L (WHO guideline) or your national limit.

09FAQ

Drinking water defluoridation FAQ

Can’t find your answer? Ask our sales engineer.

What pH works best for fluoride removal?

Activated alumina removes fluoride most effectively at about pH 5.5–6.5; at higher pH, capacity falls, so many plants adjust pH before the filter.

How is defluoridation media regenerated?

The bed is backwashed, treated with dilute sodium hydroxide to release fluoride, rinsed, then neutralised with dilute acid before returning to service.

How often does the media need replacing?

It can be regenerated many times; replace it when outlet fluoride approaches the limit soon after each regeneration.

Is activated alumina approved for drinking water?

It is widely used in drinking-water treatment. Check the approval your local authority requires, and ask us for the relevant test reports.
