01The challenge
Why does PSA hydrogen purity depend on the adsorbent layers?
Each layer removes a different impurity: activated alumina takes water, and molecular sieve takes the CO, N₂ and CH₄ that activated carbon lets through. If the sieve layer loses capacity, CO and N₂ break through first and hydrogen falls below fuel-cell or hydrotreater specification.
Our solution
- Grade: 5A molecular sieve as the top layer for CO, N₂ and CH₄; 13X where extra CO₂ removal is needed; activated alumina bottom layer for water, below the activated carbon layer.
- Regeneration: pressure swing and purge every cycle, no heating; typical adsorbent life 8–10 years.
- Outlet spec: hydrogen purity 99.9–99.999%, with CO reduced to the ppm level your downstream process requires.

5A or 13X for hydrogen PSA?
5A is the standard top layer for CO, N₂ and CH₄. 13X is added when the feed carries more CO₂ than the carbon layer can handle.
What hydrogen purity can PSA reach?
PSA typically delivers 99.9–99.999% hydrogen, depending on feed composition, number of beds and recovery target.
Why is molecular sieve the top layer?
CO and N₂ are the hardest impurities to remove; placing 5A at the product end gives the final polishing before hydrogen leaves the bed.
How long does PSA hydrogen adsorbent last?
Typically 8–10 years. Liquid carry-over, heavy hydrocarbons and valve failures that upset the cycle shorten it.
