Where is Activated Alumina for Arsenic Removal used?
Arsenic-removal activated alumina is used in well-head filters, community plants and municipal systems where groundwater arsenic exceeds the WHO guideline of 10 µg/L.
Well-water treatment
Filters on private and village wells.
Municipal treatment
Arsenic polishing in public supply.
Household filters
Point-of-use cartridges.
Activated Alumina for Arsenic Removal vs other adsorbents: which do you need?
Choose activated alumina for regenerable arsenic removal at moderate cost; iron-based media often have higher capacity but are usually single-use.
| Media | Regenerable | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Activated alumina (this product) | Yes | Best at pH 5.5–6.5; pre-oxidise As(III) |
| Iron-based media | Usually no | High capacity, disposed when spent |
| Reverse osmosis | — | Removes all minerals; higher energy |
What is Activated Alumina for Arsenic Removal?
Activated alumina for arsenic removal is a porous aluminium oxide that adsorbs arsenate, As(V), from water; arsenite, As(III), is first oxidised to As(V) for effective removal.
Type
Activated aluminium oxide, water-treatment grade
Removes
Arsenate As(V)
Best pH
About 5.5–6.5
How does Activated Alumina for Arsenic Removal work?
Arsenate ions are adsorbed on the alumina surface as water flows through the bed; pre-oxidation (for example with chlorine) converts arsenite into arsenate so it can be captured.
- Water is pre-oxidised — As(III) converted to As(V).
- pH is adjusted — to about 5.5–6.5.
- Arsenic is adsorbed — outlet is monitored against the limit.
When should you use Activated Alumina for Arsenic Removal?
Use it when well or municipal water exceeds the arsenic limit and a regenerable adsorbent suits your operation.
- Arsenic above 10 µg/L (WHO guideline) or your national limit.
- Pre-oxidation step is available or can be added.
- Regeneration on site is acceptable.
How do you regenerate Activated Alumina for Arsenic Removal?
Regenerate with dilute sodium hydroxide followed by acid neutralisation and rinsing; the spent regenerant contains arsenic and must be disposed of safely.
Regenerant
Dilute NaOH
Neutraliser
Dilute acid
Waste
Treat and dispose of regenerant safely
