Where is Activated Alumina for Fluoride Removal used?
Defluoridation activated alumina is used in household filters, community and school water plants, and municipal systems where groundwater fluoride exceeds the WHO limit.
Community water plants
Fixed-bed filters for villages, schools and towns.
Household filters
Point-of-use cartridges and gravity filters.
Industrial wastewater
Fluoride polishing after precipitation.
Activated Alumina for Fluoride Removal vs other adsorbents: which do you need?
Choose activated alumina for regenerable, low-cost fluoride removal; bone char and reverse osmosis are alternatives with different cost and handling.
| Method | Regenerable | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Activated alumina (this product) | Yes | Best at pH 5.5–6.5; widely used |
| Bone char | Limited | Animal-derived; acceptance varies |
| Reverse osmosis | — | Removes all minerals; higher energy and waste water |
What is Activated Alumina for Fluoride Removal?
Activated alumina for fluoride removal is a porous aluminium oxide whose surface exchanges fluoride ions from water, bringing fluoride below the WHO guideline of 1.5 mg/L.
Type
Activated aluminium oxide, water-treatment grade
Removes
Fluoride (F⁻)
Best pH
About 5.5–6.5
How does Activated Alumina for Fluoride Removal work?
As water flows through the bed, fluoride ions are adsorbed on the alumina surface by ion exchange, and the treated water leaves below the fluoride limit until the bed nears saturation.
- Raw water is pH-adjusted — to about 5.5–6.5 for best capacity.
- Fluoride is adsorbed — in a down-flow fixed bed.
- Outlet is monitored — the bed is regenerated before fluoride breaks through.
When should you use Activated Alumina for Fluoride Removal?
Use it when groundwater fluoride is above the WHO or national limit and you need a regenerable, low-cost treatment.
- Raw-water fluoride above 1.5 mg/L.
- Community or municipal plants with basic operating staff.
- Point-of-use filters where RO is too costly.
How do you regenerate Activated Alumina for Fluoride Removal?
Backwash the bed, regenerate with dilute sodium hydroxide, rinse, then neutralise with dilute acid; the media is reused over many cycles.
Regenerant
Dilute NaOH
Neutraliser
Dilute acid
Replace when
Capacity drops after regeneration
